\u201cThe symbol gives rise to thought\u201d, a well known saying of the French philosopher Paul Ricoeur, seems to thoroughly explain the role of contemporary art. Art is not just about what it says, but also about what possibilities it shows. Art is not a destination – a finished piece of artwork – but a journey, an interpretive process that creates a dialectic between the work, the artist and the audience. Art echoes the life rhythm of its creator and the world he\/she lives in. It also reveals traces of humanity, and the ideological trends and turbulences of society by providing avenues for airing unfinished thoughts. Through five installations, the artist intends to invite the viewer to imagine what light could be, instead of providing fixed interpretations or points of view. I was totally drawn by light when I was in Koln and Berlin in 2008. One night when I was passing the square of Koln Dom, I decided to visit the Dom because I was wondering what it would look like when there was no sunlight shining through the stained glass windows. The interior was quite and only a few visitors were there. The candle flames filled the place with warmth and peace. The warm light emitting from the candles were so different from God\u2019s light through the stained glass windows. I sat on the wooden bench and allowed myself to be showered in candle light. The Kolumba Museum in Kolon also impressed me with the amazing phenomenon of its light. It was built around surviving medieval ruins that were integrated into the new structure to become a perfect whole. The architecture, the ruins and the new structure of the museum are united as one, without seam. I felt as clear as a crystal when touched by the light coming through the countless openings in the wall.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\u5f8c\u4f86\u5728\u7d00\u5ff5\u7336\u592a\u4eba\u88ab\u7d0d\u7cb9\u5c60\u6bba\u7684\u300c\u67cf\u6797\u7336\u592a\u535a\u7269\u9928\u300d(The Jewish Museum Berlin)\u4e5f\u7d93\u6b77\u4e86\u5f88\u7279\u6b8a\u7684\u5149\u7684\u7d93\u9a57\uff0c\u90a3\u662f\u5728\u9032\u5165\u6f06\u9ed1\u5bc6\u9589\u7684\u300c\u6d69\u52ab\u4e4b\u5854\u300d(Holocaust Tower )\u4e2d\uff0c\u770b\u5230\u4e00\u9053\u5149\u5f9e\u9661\u659c\u7684\u5c4b\u9802\u7e2b\u9699\u76f4\u76f4\u843d\u4e0b\uff0c\u7336\u5982\u6f06\u9ed1\u5b87\u5b99\u4e2d\u7684\u4e00\u689d\u88c2\u7e2b\uff0c\u662f\u5b64\u5bc2\u7684\u7d55\u671b\u4e5f\u662f\u4e00\u7dda\u751f\u6a5f\u3002\u9084\u6709\u4e00\u500b\u610f\u5916\uff0c\u5c31\u662f\u5728\u6c34\u6ce5\u7246\u4e0a\u767c\u73fe\u76f4\u5f91\u7d043\u81f34\u516c\u5206\uff0c\u5982\u6578\u4f4d\u76f8\u6a5f\u93e1\u982d\u822c\u5927\u5c0f\u7684\u6d1e\uff0c\u7576\u773c\u775b\u7dca\u7dca\u8cbc\u5728\u6d1e\u53e3\u4e0a\u6642\uff0c\u53ef\u4ee5\u611f\u53d7\u5230\u5916\u9762\u7684\u5149( Figure 2 )\uff0c\u4f46\u56e0\u8996\u89d2\u6709\u9650\u800c\u770b\u4e0d\u5230\u8db3\u4ee5\u77ad\u89e3\u5916\u5728\u4e16\u754c\u7684\u666f\u7269\u3002\u9019\u4e9b\u5149\u7684\u73fe\u8c61\u5145\u6eff\u4e86\u5bcc\u9952\u7684\u96b1\u55bb\uff0c\u5f9e\u7d04\u4f2f\u7684\u82e6\u96e3\u3001\u7d0d\u7cb9\u7684\u6bd2\u6c23\u5ba4\uff0c\u5230\u5ee3\u5cf6\u6bd2\u8548\u822c\u7684\u539f\u5b50\u5f48\u7206\u70b8\uff0c\u5b83\u5230\u5e95\u8981\u544a\u8a34\u6211\u5011\u4ec0\u9ebc?\u662f\u5929\u5730\u4e0d\u4ec1\uff1f\u9084\u662f\u795e\u662f\u66b4\u6012\u548c\u611b\u5fa9\u4ec7\u7684\uff1f\u9664\u4e86\u4ee5\u4e0a\u9019\u4e9b\u7d93\u7531\u8996\u89ba\u7d93\u9a57\u6240\u5f15\u767c\u7684\u5149\u4e4b\u611f\u77e5\u5916\uff0c\u6211\u9084\u60f3\u5f9e\u95b1\u8b80\u53ca\u5176\u4ed6\u65b9\u9762\u4f86\u8ac7\u300c\u5149\u300d\u3002<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

I also had a very special experience when I was at the Jewish Museum, Berlin. In the complex stands the dark, isolated and enclosed Holocaust Tower. A light beam pierced through the roof corner like an opening from a mysterious universe – a glimpse of despair, as well as a gleam of hope for survival. Discovering holes in the wall 3 to 4 cm in diameter – almost the same size as a digital camera lens – was another surprise. However, I was unable to see what was happening on the other side of the wall when I put one eye against the hole due to the limited angel of my eyesight. All of the phenomena of light that I have mentioned here are living metaphors. From Job\u2019s sufferings, Nazi gas chambers, to the atomic explosion at Hiroshima, what messages have we got? The Tao doesn\u2019t take sides? God is wrathful and revengeful? Or is there something else? Besides the above perceptions inspired by visual experiences, I would like to talk more about light from my reading and other perspectives.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\u8b80\u5927\u6c5f\u5065\u4e09\u90ce\u6240\u5beb\u76841994\u5e74\u8afe\u8c9d\u723e\u6587\u5b78\u734e\u5f97\u734e\u611f\u8a00\u300cJapan, the Ambiguous, and Myself\u300d\u6642\uff0c\u5f97\u77e5\u4ed6\u6709\u4e00\u4f4d\u5152\u5b50\u540dHikari\uff0c\u662f\u300c\u5149\u300d\u7684\u610f\u601d\u3002\u4e4b\u5f8c\u518d\u770b\u4e86\u4ed6\u7684\u300cA Personal Matter\u300d\u548c\u300cA Healing Family\u300d\u624d\u77e5\u9053\u5230\u300c\u5149\u300d\u9019\u500b\u540d\u5b57\u66f4\u6df1\u4e00\u5c64\u7684\u6db5\u610f\u3002\u539f\u4f86\u5b69\u5b50\u662f\u4e00\u500b\u8166\u6709\u6240\u7f3a\u9677\u7684\u65b0\u751f\u5152\uff0c\u5927\u6c5f\u5065\u4e09\u90ce\u5167\u5fc3\u66fe\u76fc\u671b\u91ab\u751f\u4e0d\u8981\u6551\u4ed6\u3002\u800c\u5728\u9019\u5929\u4eba\u4ea4\u6230\u7684\u4e00\u5ff5\u4e4b\u9593\uff0c\u5b69\u5b50\u88ab\u7d66\u4e88\u4e00\u500b\u6a5f\u6703\u5b58\u6d3b\u4e86\u4e0b\u4f86\uff0c\u4e26\u88ab\u547d\u540d\u70ba\u300c\u5149\u300d\u3002\u4f46\u5149\u7684\u6df1\u523b\u610f\u7fa9\u537b\u662f\u96a8\u8457Hikari\u8207\u89aa\u4eba\u4e4b\u9593\u7684\u4e92\u52d5\u624d\u9010\u6f38\u986f\u9732\u7684\uff0cHikari\u7684\u751f\u547d\u5982\u4e00\u9ede\u71ed\u5149\uff0c\u96d6\u5fae\u5c0f\uff0c\u4f46\u56e0\u5728\u6f06\u9ed1\u4e2d\u800c\u986f\u5f97\u7279\u5225\u660e\u4eae\uff0c\u4e0d\u50c5\u8b93\u4ed6\u81ea\u5df1\u8207\u8eab\u908a\u7684\u751f\u547d\u71c3\u71d2\u3001\u767c\u5149\u767c\u71b1\uff0c\u4e5f\u8b93\u6211\u5011\u5728\u5e7d\u5e7d\u96a7\u9053\u4e2d\u770b\u5230\u4e86\u51fa\u53e3\u8655\u7684\u5149\u4eae\u3002\u9019\u662f\u6211\u8207\u300c\u5149\u300d\u5728\u6587\u5b78\u4e0a\u7684\u7b2c\u4e00\u6b21\u76f8\u9047\u3002<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

From reading Kenzaburo Oe\u2019s \u201cJapan, the Ambiguous, and Myself\u201d, I came to know that his first child was born mentally handicapped. When he first saw his baby lying in the hospital crib, he hoped the baby could not survive. After much struggle, he accepted the infant as a member of his family and named him Hikari, meaning \u201clight\u201d in Japanese. The dim light lightens the darkness while Hikari and Oe\u2019s life story unfolds. It invites us to see light at the end of the tunnel. This was my first encounter with \u201clight\u201d in literature.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

\u521d\u6b21\u770b\u8607\u4fc4\u5c0e\u6f14\u5854\u53ef\u592b\u65af\u57fa\u7684\u96fb\u5f71\u300c\u9109\u6101\u300d\uff0c\u7121\u6cd5\u7406\u89e3\u7247\u4e2d\u7684\u4f5c\u5bb6Gorchakov\u70ba\u4f55\u8981\u57f7\u610f\u624b\u6301\u98c4\u5ffd\u4e0d\u5b9a\u7684\u71ed\u706b\uff0c\u8cbb\u529b\u5730\u4fdd\u8b77\u5b83\u6e21\u904eSt. Catherine pool\u3002\u5728\u62b5\u9054\u6c60\u5b50\u7684\u53e6\u4e00\u7aef\u6642\uff0cGorchakov\u540c\u6642\u5fc3\u81df\u75c5\u767c\u800c\u4ea1\uff0c\u800c\u65e9\u5148\u5c07\u881f\u71ed\u8a17\u4ed8\u7d66\u4ed6\u7684Domenico\u4e5f\u5728\u53e6\u4e00\u500b\u57ce\u5e02\u5f15\u706b\u81ea\u711a\uff0c\u4ee5\u72a7\u7272\u7684\u65b9\u5f0f\u4f86\u62ef\u6551\u81ea\u5df1\u3001\u5bb6\u4eba\u548c\u5168\u4e16\u754c\u3002Domenico\u81ea\u711a\u524d\u66fe\u767c\u8868\u9023\u7e8c\u4e09\u5929\u7684\u6f14\u8aaa\uff0c\u5176\u4e2d\u4e00\u53e5\u8a71\u662f\uff1a\u300c\u2026Fuel the wish\u2026\u300d\uff0c\u6211\u807d\u4e86\u624d\u8c41\u7136\u660e\u767d\u300c\u5149\u300d\u7684\u53e6\u4e00\u5c64\u610f\u7fa9\u3002\u7576\u8c9d\u591a\u82ac\u7b2c\u4e5d\u4ea4\u97ff\u66f2\u7684\u5feb\u6a02\u980c\u7a81\u7136\u97ff\u8d77\uff0c\u800c\u6e3e\u8eab\u662f\u706b\u7684Domenico\u5728\u5ee3\u5834\u4e0a\u7ffb\u6efe\u6642\uff0c\u6211\u5b8c\u5168\u7121\u6cd5\u8a00\u8a9e\uff1b\u53e6\u4e00\u500b\u985e\u4f3c\uff0c\u4f46\u5e73\u548c\u8a31\u591a\u7684\u7d93\u9a57\u662f\u8046\u807dPhilip Glass\u7684\u6b4c\u5287 Satyagraha\u6642\uff0c\u611f\u53d7\u5230\u7518\u5730\u7684\u975e\u66b4\u529b\u62b5\u6297\u53ca\u4e0d\u5408\u4f5c\u4e3b\u7fa9\u70ba\u4eba\u985e\u6240\u9ede\u71c3\u7684\u73cd\u8cb4\u5e0c\u671b\u3002\u9019\u662f\u6211\u8207\u300c\u5149\u300d\u5728\u96fb\u5f71\u8207\u97f3\u6a02\u4e0a\u7684\u518d\u5ea6\u76f8\u9022\u3002<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

At the beginning, I did not understand why Gorchakov, the Russian writer in Tarkovsky\u2019s film \u201cNostalgia,\u201d moving at a snail\u2019s pace and protecting the flame of a candle-end from gusts of wind, intended to approach the portico of Saint Catherine\u2019s pool. He died from a heart attack just as he painstakingly reached it. In another city, Domeico, the man who entrusted the candle to Gorchakov, set himself on fire to save himself, his family and the whole world. When I caught the words \u201c\u2026fuel the wish\u2026\u201d in his non-stop three-day speech delivered to the public in the square before his sacrifice, the meaning of \u201clight\u201d came to me again. I was awed by seeing Domeico rolling on the square in flames with Beethoven\u2019s \u201cOde to Joy\u201d bursting out in the background. This was my second encounter with light in film and music. Another similar experience, but not so dramatic, was listening to Philip Glass\u2019s opera piece \u201cSatyagraha\u201d. It reminds me of Gandhi who lit up another precious candle for humankind.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

In painting, Rembrandt\u2019s works come to most people\u2019s minds when speaking of light, no matter what the aspect. However, the painting \u201cPortrait of Luisa\u201d by Julio Gal\u00e1n (1958-2006), a neo-expressionist painter, is what I choose to talk about here. In the painting, the female figure Luisa is taking a nap on a chair. She rests her cheek on a table covered with a striped green table cloth. A brown vase with red flowers is centered on the table, right by Luisa\u2019s pearl-like cheek. The vase, as a guardian angel, protects the sleeping Luisa from disturbance. The suspended frame-like rectangle and black ring with floating silk strips winding through it, together with the subtle violet background, tells us that Luisa is in a dream. A floating black ball with an aureola, a dream-like eye, reveals the light of knowing. Light permeates through the veil, and thus the two worlds are connected. Paul Ricoeur said, the core of the tragedy of Oedipus is the problem of light. \u201cThe seer is blind with respect to the eyes of his body, but he sees the truth in the light of the mind. That is why Oedipus, who sees the light of day but is blind with regard to himself\u2026\u201d (1970). Reading his interpretation, I realized the meaning of \u201clight from within\u201d. Inspired by previous encounters of light in architecture, literature, film, music, painting and philosophy, I reflected on them and transformed my thoughts into five installations. My intention is to express what light could possibly be. The visual symbols are metaphoric; the meanings are unfixed and weaved into layers; the message is personal and ambiguous. The viewers are free to choose any unique or general perspective to imagine or experience the installations. The interpretation is open to the audience. In the end, I would like to bring my deeply inscribed memory of Leonard Cohen\u2019s music, lyrics and vocals of \u201cDear Heather\u201d forward as the prologue of this exhibition. It is a poem, a chant, a wish, a lingering imagery, and a prayer of mine.
